Bailey - Our school therapy dog

Having a school therapy dog offers numerous benefits for both students and staff. Therapy dogs provide emotional support and help reduce stress and anxiety, creating a calmer and more positive learning environment. Their presence can improve students’ mental well-being, boost confidence, and encourage social interaction, especially for those who may struggle with communication or feel isolated. Additionally, therapy dogs can promote empathy and responsibility as students learn to care for and respect animals. Overall, having a therapy dog in school fosters a sense of comfort and belonging, which can enhance academic performance and overall happiness within the school community.
Bailey has already had a significant impact on a number of children within the school and we have had lots of positive feedback from parents, children and staff. One of the favourites is a weekly book club where children come along and take turns to read to Bailey. Reading to a school therapy dog is a powerful way to support children’s literacy and confidence. Research shows that dogs provide a non-judgmental, calming presence, which helps reduce anxiety often associated with reading aloud. This relaxed environment encourages reluctant readers to practice without fear of making mistakes, improving fluency and comprehension over time. Studies have found that children who read to dogs demonstrate increased motivation and enjoyment of reading, as well as measurable gains in reading skills. Bailey's attentive, friendly demeanour creates a sense of comfort and security, making reading a positive and rewarding experience.
