KS1 and KS2 Talent Show

We are very excited for the return of SJB’s Talent Shows! Children will be able to audition for the talent show during school time on Wednesday 18th January and 19th January and there will be a few children selected from each year group. The KS1 talent show will be held on Wednesday 1st February and the KS2 show will be on Thursday 2nd February. We look forward to seeing all the wonderful talents our children have to share!

2022

This term the children have been working extremely hard to develop their musical skills, here is a short update on what they have been up to!

Year 6 have been learning about the music of WW2, studying Vera Lynn, Glenn Miller and Aaron Copeland. They also wrote and brilliantly performed their own WW2 song as a whole class using guitars, vocals, keyboards, piano and drums.

Year 5 have been studying Dvorak’s New World Symphony and became very creative as they wrote their own spiritual melodies and learnt how to use musical notation to write these excellent tunes.

Year 4 learnt about musical Rondo’s and created their own class ‘Bruno Rondo’ based on Encanto’s hit song ‘We don’t talk about Bruno.’ They had a lot of fun performing together as a class, playing djembes, glockenspiels, and percussion to make a powerful Rondo piece.

Year 3 have been rhythmic masterminds, creating beat grids and learning about ostinatos to add structure and groove to their musical pieces.

Year 2 have been learning about crochets and quavers and used them to write and perform mini Great Fire of London songs.

Year 1 have been using music to celebrate themselves and each other. We learnt a song called Good to Be Me and playing rhythm games to learn more about each other!

Reception have been sensational singers this term and have been learning lots of new songs as a whole group. We have been learning how to play different percussion instruments like claves, shakers and bells.

Choir at Clare Walk and Jubilee Library

Our school choir visited both Clare Walk Sheltered Accommodation and the Jubilee library to spread some Christmas cheer with their beautiful singing. We had so much fun on our trips and enjoyed performing to and meeting different audiences. We were grateful for the lovely praise and kind words of thanks we received at both events.

Reception and KS1 Nativities

Well done to all the wonderful singers, dancers, narrators and actors in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 who worked so hard on their Christmas performances! There were lots of songs, actions, and words to remember and everybody did an excellent job. We are so proud of you all! All the shows were brilliant, and it was such a joyful way to share the Nativity story and to begin our Christmas celebrations.

KS2 Christmas Carol Concert

This year’s KS2 evening Carol Concert at St John the Baptist Church was a wonderful celebration of the Christmas Story. We were so delighted to once again be able to perform in our beautiful church, as we have not had this opportunity for the last couple of years. The children worked so hard to create a joyful and reflective performance and thoroughly enjoyed learning the songs, actions, dances and words and we are very proud of them all. It felt very special to have had the children, teachers, families, and parishioners gathering together to sing carols and it was certainly a beautiful start to the Christmas celebrations!

CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE

Brighton & Hove Music and Arts are offering a wide range of musical opportunities for your children this summer. If any children are interested in workshops in singing, guitar, music technology, Rock & Pop, strings, woodwind (and many more!) please take a form from the school office.

TRENCH BROTHERS

We are very excited to be taking part in a very special and acclaimed ‘imaginative and inspiring’ First World War primary schools project called ‘Trench Brothers’. This project celebrates 100 years since the end of World War I. Our Year 5 class will be involved in a huge range of activities linked to WW1, including workshops in composition, puppetry and artifacts. Their work will culminate in a big performance at Brighton Dome on 17th October.

Trench Brothers focuses on ethnic minority soldiers and brings to life the stories of soldiers from the Indian Army (some of whom were hospitalised in Brighton) and from the British West Indies Regiment (many of whom trained in Seaford). Take a further look…TRENCH BROTHERS
