Year 6 (ID 1060)

Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Year 6 is taught by Mrs Pelling. She is assisted by Mrs Salusbury.

Curriculum

In year 6 we have 3 exciting topics.

In our World War II topic we learn about the causes of war, rationing and how evacuation affected over 3.5 million people in Britain. We also read Michael Rosen’s book ‘The Missing’ and his search for his missing relative who vanished in France during the war. We move onto our local study in history and how Brighton was impacted by visiting the Take Shelter exhibit and air raid shelter at Downs junior school. We also read ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ by Michelle Magorian; the story of an eight-year-old boy evacuated from London and placed with a gruff, widower called Mr Tom. During Spring term we learn about Shackleton’s Endurance expedition to cross the South Pole. Each child becomes a member of the crew for this perilous journey as we explore their journey through the Antarctic ice. We also learn about South America, volcanos and the tropical climate of Brazil. We learn about the physical geography of the continent (the Andes and how they are formed) and the human geography (including popular foods and populations.) After half term we move onto our local study comparing parts of the UK to parts of South America. For summer term in history we learn about the Atlantic slave trade, why it begun and how some people campaigned to stop it (including Harriett Tubman and the underground railway). For our geography topic we learn all about Scandinavia (the home of the Northern Lights) and the human and physical geography of the area. We also have our class residential, staying away for two nights, exploring outside and adventurous activities like rock climbing and forest walks. Finally, we end our year with the year six production – a performance to rival Hollywood – as we say our final goodbye to our wonderful year six class.
